Area Law Enforcement
Roughly 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Cars, walls and mailboxes were marked, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they stated in a statement.
Law enforcement state they were alerted late on Wednesday, when a man observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued fluid.
The fluid had been placed in the form of a banned symbol, they added.
Law enforcement then located many other marked automobiles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under regulations prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Police say early analysis indicate the substance was likely blood from a person.
"There is still no indication as to its source; officials are currently not informed of any injuries in relation with the incident," they added.
City officials announced they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the community for details.
A high-ranking representative stated the incident rendered him stunned and had to be solved promptly.
"This incident affects the very heart of Hanau and revives the wounds of the extremist terrorist attack five years ago," he wrote on online, mentioning the murder of nine victims by a gunman targeting residents of immigrant origin in five years prior.
