Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships this year.

Athletes are granted the ability to challenge particular decisions from the official, following the system currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
